Corporate Community Days
Following are the causes the Sonnenalp’s Community Involvement Committee has identified to work with during Sonnenalp Serves week:
2008 Projects
Salvation Army Canteen Training
Volunteers must be willing to be on call for emergencies that take place throughout the year. The canteen is a mobile kitchen on wheels that can serve up to 200 meals an hour. Road closures and search and rescue events are examples of the types of emergencies that come up approximately six times per year.
Earth Day Party for the Planet
Gore Range Natural Science School will need volunteers to help with vendor booths, tree planting, kid’s activities and more.
Latino Summit Fundraiser
This event is perfect for Spanish speakers. Colorado Mountain College is holding a potluck dinner at Battle Mountain High School. Volunteers are asked to cook a homemade dish and then attend the event to serve it. The proceeds will go toward a conference to help Latino high school students learn about all of their options in this valley, including continuing education.
4-H Livestock Barn Clean Up
This includes spring cleaning as well as installing pulley systems for the indoor/outdoor pen doors.
Salvation Army Volunteer Recognition Party
Volunteers are needed to assist with a celebration at the Eagle-Vail Pavilion. They will prep and cook food, set up tables and chairs, blow up balloons and decorate, greet guests, serve food and tear down after the event.
Meet the Wilderness Climbing Wall Cleaning
Volunteers are needed to tackle the indoor climbing wall in Gypsum with cleaning products. The wall and rock holds are in need of a deep clean.
Recycling Ambassadors
Eagle Valley Alliance for Sustainability has upgraded their recycling centers, and they are looking for volunteers to stand by and educate individuals as they drop off their recyclable products. English and Spanish speakers are needed for this project.
Projects for Senior Citizens
The senior site coordinator will come up with a list of projects needed by seniors in the Minturn or Eagle communities. The list could include raking leaves, grocery shopping, fix-it projects, etc. One lady is in need of a minor roof repair.
Family Learning Center Projects
Volunteers are needed to work on improving this day care center in Edwards. They need help refurbishing the playground, reading to kids, helping in the kitchen, doing maintenance repairs and other meaningful projects.
Resource Center Projects
This event requires a great amount of manual labor. The Sonnenalp has been asked to help put up a permanent awning and install a fence around the basketball court. And Sonnenalp Fine Gardens will build a garden for the residents.
RECON Salvage Yard Projects
Eagle Valley Alliance for Sustainability has a yard full of construction items in Wolcott that they have saved from going into the landfill. They need to organize and inventory all of the items. This means moving lumber to one side, dishwashers to the other, etc. And, they need help graveling the entire yard, painting the office and cataloguing everything via data entry.
Early Childhood Building Refurbishment
This day care center in Edwards received a lot of wear and tear when it temporarily served as a high school. Now, they need help putting the place back together. Walls need to be painted, curtains need to be installed and the playground needs a makeover.
Loaves and Fishes Community Dinner
Volunteers are needed to prep and serve dinner to developmentally disabled adults and others in need.
Fundraiser for Melissa Eckdahl
Volunteers are needed to spend four hours helping with the silent auction and selling $50 tickets to a new age concert at the Vilar Center. This Vail Valley Charitable Fund fundraiser will raise money for a local resident who became paralyzed by an auto accident on I-70. Volunteers will be able to stay to enjoy the concert for free.
HIV/Red Ribbon Awareness and Prevention
The Red Ribbon Project has a list of local businesses that are willing to distribute HIV prevention literature and free condoms. They need volunteers with their own transportation who would be willing to drive throughout the valley to distribute these items.
Meet the Wilderness Ropes Course Clearing and Repair
Meet the Wilderness could use up to a dozen volunteers to help move beetle-kill logs from trees they had cut down at their location near Cross Creek in Minturn. They also hope to do some minor repairs to the ropes course.
Community Pride Highway Clean Up
The largest highway clean up in the U.S. boasts up to 1000 participants! The Sonnenalp can send an unlimited number of volunteers out to cleanup sections of I-70. Every ten volunteers will need a Team Leader and will be assigned a one-mile section of highway.
Habitat for Humanity Outlet Projects
Because Habitat will not begin construction until the summertime in Edwards, they have come up with a fun project at their Outlet Store in Gypsum. They are hoping to have volunteers to help build sheds and assist with other projects.
